Sri Palam Silks, for light weight sarees | Chennai

What you see - Located in Pondy Bazaar, this shop is quite easy to miss especially in the day time. So just look for the shop bang opposite Fathima Plaza’s entrance. You will see a uniformed guard beside a tinted glass door. This, when opened, leads to a flight of black and textured ochre stairs that run up a floor and on your right is another air-conditioned room with a glass front. That is Sri Palam Silks for you.

This shop is quite different from most of its neighboring saree shops in the sense that their sarees are not openly displayed. Instead you find five similar looking wooden wardrobes that hold their stock. Counters with padded chairs across it are placed along this small room of around under a thousand square feet. The sales persons are quite old fashioned in their approach and show their wares cautiously.

What you get - The shop was started by Jeyasree Ravi, the daughter of Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetty and wife of PJ Ravi of the Kumaran Silks family. Pure silk sarees in a variety of weights - light weight or those weighing just under 200 grams - are their specialty. The price of these sarees is around Rs. 2,000 and above. These sarees look a lot like jacquard and printed silk products. They have a zari border running on both sides to add luster.

They also have the regular thicker, heavy silk sarees of Kanchipuram in dual toned checks, computer aided designed borders, those with thread buttas as well as zari buttas in various motifs. They also have sarees with turning borders and the kalanjali pattu, which was a rage at some time. These consist of zari work along the whole length of the saree, with leaves and flower motifs attached to them. The effect is a show stopper.

These sarees go up to Rs. 30,000. They also have readymade silk sarees in the range of Rs. 4,000 to Rs.15,000.

Our verdict - They may not have a huge variety, but do have lots of colors and less of a crowd to maneuver, when compared to the larger shops that can leave you jostling for space, especially during sale or festival times. Their claim to fame was their unique creation - a Kanchipuram silk saree with a matching mobile phone pouch in zari.
