Fun time at Hansel & Gretel What you see – Hansel & Gretel is a single level recreation center for children up to 12 years of age who can come in for some fun games, puzzles and workshops, while their parents keep up with their work schedules, shopping and appointments.
Located in a residential area in Chennai, this place was started on May Day of 2008 by Vidya. It is an air-conditioned area, forming the ground floor of a two storied house. It has within it a red and blue gallery that functions both as an audio-visual room cum class room, a green and purple Barney themed room, a yellow and red Winnie the Pooh room and bright orange and green rooms. All have parquet flooring.
The school is a WiFi zone, so some parents can catch up on their work while their children are having fun. There are three levels of security here. There is an outdoor play area where the swing and slide are in place.
What you get – Hansel & Gretel has four teachers and four nannies who run the show efficiently. There is a nook for boys with small cars, and one for girls with a doll house. There is a small ball pit for toddlers. There are also board games like Chess and Monopoly, besides 50 different kinds of puzzles to choose from. Their library too is well stocked with board books and encyclopedia to interest anyone below the age of 12. They screen children’s movies that do not include cartoons. Sample their collection of ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘ Mary Poppins’, ‘Hiedi’ and the Harry Potter series among others.
They also hold workshops at no extra cost, quite regularly. Topics include origami, embroidery, creative writing, drawing and painting. These courses are not made compulsory to all those who happen to use their facilities.
They also lend their premises to birthday parties, and charge Rs. 200 per child. This includes the rent, furniture, return gifts, decorations and party caps. The refreshments and cake however, need to be brought by the party hosts.
They charge Rs. 75 per hour. For five days (one hour each day) the charge is Rs. 325. A 10-day visit pass for an hour each day is charged at Rs. 600. They even have an All Day Pass for Rs. 300 for the day. The monthly pass is Rs. 1,500 for unlimited time.
Our verdict - If you want your child to spend quality time, and learn to interact with others, this is a great place to bring them to. Those below four years of age need a chaperone if not a parent present to take them through various activities. There is no extra charge for this. They also provide fruit juice and biscuits for Rs. 25 if the children feel hungry. There is parking space for around eight cars.
